To celebrate the 90 th anniversary of the construction of the first Trig Pillar, this walk is a tribute to the amazing surveyors who carried out the Retriangulation of Great Britain (1935 – 1962). As well as a great walk, we will visit the three closest Trig Pillars on the network and learn about how the Ordnance Survey completed one of the great survey projects.
We take the 11.10 bus to New Radnor and start our climb up Mutton Dingle, around Knowle Hill and make our way to Bache Hill to our first Trig Pillar, in this case a Tertiary one. After discussing how Trig Pillars were built, we make our way across country to Black Mixen, the second highest peak in the area and our second Trig Pillar, this being a Secondary one. Here we will discuss the basis of the 1936 Retriangulation and the underlying parameters stated on our much-loved Ordnance Survey maps.
Leaving Black Mixen we will traverse round to Great Rhos, the highest peak in the area, and the site of a fairly rare Primary Trig Pillar. Hear we will discuss the basis of the initial primary triangulation that took part in the late 1930’s, both the simple and complex aspects of the project.
We will then walk down Davey Morgan’s Dingle and then over into Harley Dingle where we get an interesting view of the facilities of Radnor, a UK MoD accredited independent test house for the test and evaluation of weapons, ordnance, munitions and explosives! We will arrive back in New Radnor to catch the 16.30 or 17.33 bus back to Kington (depends on how quick we walk!).
